Efforts will continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency by supporting smart grids and renewable energy production.
The use of technological services such as the Air Pollution Monitoring System, the designing of Fuel Cell and Internet of Things technologies with TÜBİTAK, and the high awareness of smart and renewable energy are standout points where Istanbul has developed in the energy field.
The strategy creation process benefited from the opportunity to examine applications in nearby areas and the high energy potential of the country due to its geographical location.
Dependence on fossil fuels, an insufficient renewable energy investment strategy, lack of coordination and communication among energy sector stakeholders, weak incentives and infrastructure for electric vehicles, and excessive dependence on foreign electricity generation were determined as the points that Istanbul should be improved in.
For this reason, the Istanbul energy strategy has been created by paying attention to climate change, decreasing natural resources, the interruption of energy supply due to regional political uncertainties and the population growth which determines the infrastructure development rate.
