Smart Economy

Field Strategy

While the new commodity “data'' becomes available for every economic activity, the strongly supported entrepreneurial spirit, cooperation, investment opportunities and the productivity provided by digitized business processes draws a new development scenario for Istanbul.

Istanbul’s strongest economic traits are its economic diversity, it being the Turkey's largest city economy, the presence of many global company offices, regional ICT R&D centers, and technoparks, a high municipal budget, an emphasis on entrepreneurship and a dynamic workforce, a young population, the Financial Center project, and a diversity of careers.

However, the lack of open data, investors' demands for transparency on an increasing number of issues, gray areas in current regulations being interpreted against new ventures, a relatively low per capita income compared to competing cities, an exaggerated perception of risk, and eco-political predictability are economic areas where Istanbul needs to make progress.

While implementing strategies, a younger, cheaper and more qualified workforce compared to competitors, and a close location to target markets and logistics should be utilized. Specific attention should be paid to the brain drain and the relatively rapid development of rival cities. In light of the current situation and the analyses carried out, creating a smart economy based on data and information, which stands out with open data and public-private sector cooperation, has been determined as the most important development area for Istanbul.
